This is a white rum based on a blend of distillates from Trinidad, Jamaica, and Barbados. According to the brand, Barbados provides “richness”, Jamaica provides “structure”, and Trinidad provides “finesse”.

Plantation is a French producer of rum from Pierre Ferrand, a Cognac producer. They source distillates from all over the world, often bottling them with a fair bit of information on how the rum was produced. It’s a really fun way to explore rum, and they are generally decent quality. In Canada, most rum that are sold in the provincial liquor boards are rich and sweet, and only showcases one side of rum - and the side of rum that I don’t tend to like as much as the complex, dryer styles. It’s nice to see some of these make their way through to Canada.

This rum is made from column and pot distillation from Barbados, column distillation from Trinidad, and pot still distillation from Jamaica. The Barbados component is unaged, the Trinidad component is 2-3 years old, and the Jamaica component is 10 years old.

Overall, this is quite a nice white rum – far different from what you’d see in a basic Captain Morgan white or a Bacardi white rum. We have lots of notes - blueberry, spice, banana, brown sugar, bamboo, and lots of fruit notes. The palate is lightly sweet, clean, with berries and some jujubes. Clean light finish.

Assessment: Recommended - for a light rum. But if you’ve had a few good white rums, I’d say you could pass on this.

Value: Pretty decent, for $28.

This rum isn’t on the plantation site, so I don’t know much about it. But, as with the other Plantation rums- I’d guess that it spent a number of years in ex-bourbon casks in Trinidad and then was finished in ex-cognac casks in France.

Not bad! The nose has caramel, molasses, dried fruit, honey, oak - lightly sweet. The palate is sweet, dry, spicy, earthy - very enjoyable and not too sweet. Lots on the finish - molasses, tannin, orange. Very pleasant! It’s not much like a standard sweet, commercial rum -this is much more vibrant, rich, and not as sweet. It’s nice to see rums like this make their way to Ontario/Quebec. It’s hard to get much diversity in rum in Canada.

Assessment: Recommended. Towards the bottom of the category, but in the category.

Value: Not bad at $50. A bit higher proof would help.

Caroni is a legendary rum distillery which shut down in 2002 after the shut down of the sugar refinery which the distillery used as an ingredient source. It was noted for its heavy rum which supplied the British navy, but now it's known for a strong, unique and exceedingly complex rum. This rum was bottled from 7 casks which yielded 2700 bottles - over the 17 years there was an evaporation loss of 80%. But, what remains - remarkable rum.

What a fascinating nose. I’m not that exposed to premium and boutique rums, only having explored the largely mass produced and commercial rums. This is exactly what I have been looking for in exploring connoisseur rums – extremely unique. Warm rubber, tar, iodine, black pepper, clove, peat (not peat smoke, but rather peat bogs), dust, orange peel, dried orange, dried apricot, prune, bamboo, tamari – absolutely fascinating. Things become clearer with water, but it’s remarkable how much complexity is maintained at the higher ABV levels.

The palate continues with the medicinal and rubber notes, along with all the spice and citrus – but adding some cacao nibs and vanilla cream. I love the effect – it starts out big, dips down for a second or two, and then the flavor starts to grow and grow – sort of like a „U” in terms of the impact of flavor. The finish is full of almost every note in the nose – fabulous, rich, and enduring – but has maybe even more, with the vanilla cream, cacao, and some milk chocolate and oak coming in as well. Ubelieveable – in my top echelon of spirits.

Assessment: Exceptional. One of the best spirits I’ve ever tasted (inclusive of whisky!).

Value: Low (this goes for around $250 US) – but if you want to spend the money, I would!
