Nose: Heavy sherry nuttiness and dried fruit, along with the rancio character and a fairly strong grape element almost as if it spent some time in wine casks. There’s a lot going on! Vanilla, some menthol, spices, lightly smoky peat, heavy freshly baked bread, dried apricot, custard, fruitcake…
Taste: Nutty and light vanilla before some ashy, smoky peat takes over the show still with a bit of a waft of creaminess and vanilla right at the end. After so much sherry on the nose, it’s surprising to find so little here. The balance of the peat is just about right – well constructed on the palate.
Finish: Lightly drying, with some vanilla, a light floral character, saffron, raisins and some peat. It’s a slightly nutty, too. It has a bit of a creamy feel to it and light citrus too, with some light peaty vegetal character as well. The body could perhaps be a bit bigger, but overall it’s quite well done.
Very nice flavour in this one – intriguing and well blended. The flavour weight, and complexity is well done – a very compelling blend, with a good range of flavours from dried fruit to lightly vegetal peat to smoke to spice.
