Review: Barnburner Whisky / by Jason Hambrey

3 years; bourbon cask finish
corn and rye
Distiller N/A (Ontario)

Barnburner is a sourced three year old whisky which is blended and finished in Kentucky ex-bourbon barrels.

This whisky won a gold medal at the 2020 Canadian Whisky Awards, a pretty good achievement! Well then, what did I think?

Quite the nose - old raisins, orange peel, baking spice, lavender – opening with time in particular in the floral notes. Lots of dried fruit notes – prunes, in particular. There is nice fruity, tangy rye throughout – it does a nice trick! The palate is enjoyable and balanced, with a fruity character that is almost reminiscent of wine. The sweetness is just about right, and there is a nice building finish. Interesting stuff!

Value: At the upper end of average, at $35.
