Review: Bowmore Aged 21 Years Single Malt Scotch Whisky (Bottled ~1996) / by Jason Hambrey

Bowmore 21 Old.jpg
21 Years
100% Malted Barley
Distiller Bowmore (Bowmore, Scotland)

This is an older bottle of Bowmore - bought in France in the last 1990s. It was part of a box set, along with the a 12, 15, 17 and 21 year old - and a bottle of Bowmore Legend. Quite different than the Bowmore we see these days!

Gorgeous nose. Spicy, earthy, dusty, dried fruit, jams, smoke, vanilla, blueberries, marmalade, and a nice ethereal characteristic. A bit briny, too – some capers and pickled beans. The palate comes together nicely – a smoky edge, roasted chickpeas, marmalade, and just gets better with time. The finish is complex, big, and smoky. It has a bit of that sweet tart character I found in the rest of this set, but it’s a bit more subtle here.

This is really nice!

Highly Recommended (50% of all whiskies I’ve reviewed to date get this recommendation or higher).
