Review: SMWS GN1.1 "Gee-Whiz" Gin / by Jason Hambrey

Distiller Glasgow Distillery (Glasgow, Scotland)

A Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottling of gin? What have we come to? Something special. A friend gave me a sample of this and it did not dissapoint - at all.

What a nice gin! Very complex on the nose – cucumber, rose, lots of spices – the rose is really nice. Yet, the nose is quite dry – with notes of dried flowers and dried tea – but all sorts of other stuff – dried peach, ginger, cedar, lemon peel, anise,

The palate is clean, rich, full of floral and spicy notes – and, I might as well repeat the nose – they are all in there, with an emphasis on gin and especially cucumber, like rich cucumber peel. Also, at 50%, it has a generous amount of oomph. What a nice gin! This is a highlight of my gin year. Milk chocolate too. The finish is quite nice, too – spicy and rich, with a lot of rich spice, rose, and cucumber remaining. There’s almost a touch of dill, too.

Assessment: Exceptional. One of the best gins I’ve ever tried, if not, perhaps, the best.
