Distiller | Benromach (Forres, Scotland) |
Benromach has been around since the 19th century, butit lay silent from 1983 to 1998 after it was bought and revitalized by the independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, who purchased the distillery just 7 years after they themselves formed as a company. This whisky is actually spirit distilled by Gordon & MacPhail themselves, who didn't start distilling until 2004. They have revitalized the brand, and it has been received well by connoisseurs.

The peat is there, dry, with almost some sweet bacon-like smokiness. The sherry, apple seeds, raisins, dried apricot – I’ve never had dried peaches but I imagine if I had them I’d find something similar there as here. The body is perfect for the set of flavours present – not too big, and not too soft, and with a good sweetness…and a developing, complex, spicy finish too. Fantastic stuff.
