Review: Danfield's Private Reserve 10 Year Old Canadian Whisky / by Jason Hambrey

10 yrs
Distiller Black Velvet (Lethbridge, Alberta)

Danfield's sits at the top of the line of whiskies at Black Velvet distillery in Lethbridge, Alberta, and, indeed - a very worthwhile line of whiskies. The 21 year old is stunning (and less than $50), and one of the best Canadian whiskies.

Review (2016)

  • Batch: N/A

  • Bottling Date: 2013

Soft, and clean - quite graceful. All sorts of apple in this one - seed, flesh, juice, skin, the smell of apples in a cellar - with toffee, white grape, cinnamon, clove, and rich wood underneath which lends good complexity into the mix. Lightly earthy, as well...really not bad! Pleasing, and definitely Danfield's - I am pleasantly surprised. Light bitterness on the end drops the score here a touch, but this is quite worthwhile.

Recommended (81% of whiskies I’ve reviewed to date get this recommendation or higher).

Value: High, at $33.
