Review: Bowmore 1984 Vintage Single Malt Scotch Whisky / by Jason Hambrey

Bowmore 1984 1.jpg
16 Years; Ex sherry casks
100% Malted Barley
Distiller Bowmore (Bowmore, Scotland)

This was a limited release, from 2000, of a vatting of Bowmore which only yielded 2201 bottles. Too bad we’re no longer in a market where these are still available.

The nose is amazing! Peppermint, cinnamon, light smoke, dried fruit, light spice, and growing baking spice – and lots of patchouli! The addition of water brings out smoke and wintergreen, and the entire nose comes more into balance. The palate is thick, with loads of mint, wintergreen, patchouli, wintergreen, smoke, and vegetal characteristics. There is lots of dried fruit, too – and the palate retains its richness and spiciness – but it goes all over the place with notes of sweet tarts, cinnamon, and baking bread. The finish is huge, deep, and  long, full of bubblegum, peppermint, patchouli, lots of herbal notes, dried flowers, hibiscus, and spice.

Exceptional (3% of whiskies I’ve reviewed to date receive this, my highest recommendation).
